MT. VERNON – A Mt. Vernon man was charged Friday morning in Jefferson County Court with three counts of murder in the Wednesday shooting death of  his father, 48-year-old Sam J. Gibson of Mt. Vernon.

Thirty-year-old Traviel C. Gibson was additionally charged with one count of Class 2 robbery. According to Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse, he pronounced Sam Gibson dead at 12:19 p.m. Wednesday of a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to police, around 12:19 p.m. Wednesday, a distraught woman entered the Mt. Vernon Police Department lobby and reported that a man had possibly been shot at a home in the 1800 block of Cherry in Mt. Vernon. The woman also reported that a man at the home attacked her and stolen her phone.

Officers reported that as they arrived at the home, they saw Traviel C. Gibson run into the home. Officers also saw a dead man on the front porch of the home. Despite several commands from officers, Gibson refused to cooperate and exited the home.

Officers ultimately entered the home to make contact with Gibson, who reportedly continued to resist officers resulting in one officer suffering minor injuries when taking him into custody.

Bail was set at $3 million for Traviel Gibson Friday morning and remains in the Jefferson County Jail where he was taken after his arrest Wednesday. He’s next scheduled for a June 2 preliminary hearing and first appearance in court with his appointed attorney.
